8 Tips to Spring Clean Your Routine
As the seasons change and winter gives way to spring, it's important to make small adjustments in our skincare routines. The colder months usually leave our skin dry, dull, and in need of hydration and protection, so a routine refresh for the warmer seasons is necessary! In this blog post, we'll cover what you can do so you can spring forward with confidence and a more organized vanity.
- Hydration First
- Winter chills and indoor heating have been harsh towards our skin barrier leaving it quenched and dehydrated. With spring underway, we can also expect even more moisture loss, especially with the temps slowly rising and the air becoming drier. Get ahead of dryness by transitioning to lighter, water-based formulas and looking out for products with hyaluronic acid and glycerin to lock in moisture without feeling too heavy.
- Play Safe in the Sun
- We're not going to BEET around the bush, SPF protection is crucial especially as the days get longer. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to defend against UVA and UVB rays. And even if we experience some spring showers, be sure to reapply every two hours to keep up your UV defense.
- Ditch Dead Skin Buildup
- Like a squirrel coming out of hibernation with its collection of empty nut shells, we're also coming out of our own hibernation but with our collection of dead skin cells. And to get rid of all that build up, try using a chemical exfoliant containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). They help to unclog pores, even out texture, and refresh you complexion without being abrasive!
- Lighten Up
- Springtime means it's time to stow away heavy, occlusive skincare products for lighter formulas suited for warmer climates. Go for water-based or gel-based skincare products so you can still get the hydration you need without overwhelming your pores. Switching to lighter formulas also ensures that the products you layer over each other can still be absorbed so you can enjoy the full benefits of your routine!
- A Side of Antioxidants
- Combat the increased environmental stressors of spring like pollution and UV radiation by using antioxidant-rich products into your routine. Look for formulas that have ingredients like vitamin C, green tea extract, and niacinamide to neutralize free radicals and to further nourish your overall skin health.
- Switch Up How You Cleanse
- Transition to a gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and other impurities without stripping your skin. For instance, a cleanser like Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser deeply cleanses the skin but still maintains a healthy skin barrier by leaving the natural lipids and oils you need. Don't steal hydration from your skin even when you cleanse — seal it instead!
- Stay Consistent
- With ANY change you make, consistency is key especially when transitioning your skincare routine. Stick to your essentials, and if you make any changes, slowly incorporate it into your routine and give your skin time to adjust! Results won't happen overnight and if you overload your skin new treatments or products, it could lead to unforeseen irritation and stress so see how your skin reacts and tweak little by little to tackle your specific concerns.
- Tune Out the Noise
- We are all unique individuals and the same can be said about your skin, so if you see a trend or product work on someone else, that might not be the case for you. That's why we always remind our community to tune out the noise and listen to their skin because everyone has their own individual needs and preferences. It also doesn't mean you shouldn't try new things, but if you do notice any signs of changes or sensitivity, just be sure to dial back and switch to milder products.
Transitioning from winter to spring skincare is an important step not only for your skin but for you! We change with the seasons so it isn't a surprise that we also have to adjust our skincare routines. From using lighter formulas or upping your SPF protection, making these seasonal changes are necessary but they can also be simple to do so give it a shot and let us know how it goes! We'll be sure to do the same once summer comes.
